Hair loss, thinning hair and baldness affect the self-confidence of those who suffering from this condition and also affect their personality. In this article, we will discuss a solution to this problem, in which there are many remedies treatments that claim to be a miracle cure, but the results are often not as desired.

Causes of Hair Loss, Thinning Hair and Baldness

Hair loss and baldness are mainly caused by hormones or genetics. Receding hairline is a common symptom of male pattern baldness which involves loss of hair on the front of the head. In addition, receding hairline is a common cause of age-related hair loss. Although the transition from receding hairline to baldness is progresses gradually, it is inevitable. Receding hairline can widen the forehead in young people. There are other causes that can lead to hair growth decrease and hair loss, in addition to genetic predisposition.

The causes of hair loss also include responses to excess testosterone, stress or vitamin deficiencies due to poor nutrition. Thyroid disorders can also lead to hair loss. Receding hairline is seen when the patient reaches stage 2 and 3 of Norwood scale.

Hyperthyroidism leads to thinner and finer hair, while thyroid hypofunction leads to dry and brittle hair. Frequent sunbathing or sauna can also affect the hair follicles and hair growth, resulting in atrophy and death of hair follicles.

You should undergo a diagnostic test to determine the possible cause as soon as you notice the first signs of hair loss. A permanent solution is hair transplantation if the cause of baldness or thinning hair is genetics.

Thinning hair and baldness can be treated initially with natural remedies.

We recommend a diet high in iron and low in fat, as certain nutrients are required to stimulate hair follicles growth. Zinc, vitamin B, biotin, vitamin E and selenium should be included in the diet. This is to provide the hair with essential nutrients. Supplements can be taken to stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss if these nutrients are not adequately obtained from daily diet.

In addition to these nutrients, we can also use anti-hair loss shampoos to may the progression of hair loss and receding hairline and enhance the hair follicle performance with continued use of these treatments or shampoos. However, these treatments are of little or no effect if the cause of hair loss is genetics.

Minoxidil and Finasteride for Receding Hairline

Minoxidil and finasteride are popular medications for the treatment of hair loss, thinning hair and baldness caused by genetics and have been proven to be effective with long-term continued use. These substances have the abilities to slow down hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth. However, they cannot restore the lost hair which is the main difference compared to hair transplantation,

To treat hair loss, minoxidil is applied twice a day on affected areas and it is recommended to start using it as soon as you notice any signs of thinning hair. It is considered a cost-ineffective method because patients have to use it for many years, resulting in a rather high cost.

Side effects of minoxidil include allergic reactions and skin irritations or dry scalp.  In some cases, hair growth in undesirable areas, decrease in blood pressure along with dizziness and palpitations may be observed.

Finasteride is an oral medication that requires a prescription. It has been shown to be effective in stopping hair loss in 70-80% of men with regular use and increasing hair growth by an average of 17 hairs per square centimeter. There are also some disadvantages, such as enlarged breasts, chest pain, and decreased sexual sensation and fertility in men. Compared to minoxidil, finasteride is considered much more expensive.

Minoxidil and finasteride are to be regularly used for the best results. If the patients stop using it, the symptoms of hair loss resume within 3 months.

Tips

According to study of hair transplantation costs, not only the difference in prices between clinics, but there are also huge differences in quality. Therefore, you should do some research before deciding on a hair transplant to reduce the potential risks.

Hair Transplantation

Thinning hair and receding hairline are often difficult to treat and patients have to live with these problems for the rest of their lives until it progresses to complete baldness. Hair transplantation is the only long-term effective solution to this problem.

For hair transplantation at the front of the head, each graft containing 1-4 hair shafts is extracted from the dense hair area at the back of the head and then transplanted into the recipient area. The hair grafts must be placed as closed as possible to provide a natural-looking result. The number of grafts required in the hair transplantation depends on the decree of hair loss.

At least 2,500 grafts are required in case of advanced hair loss for permanent, natural-looking results. Hair transplant is the best method for people with androgenetic alopecia or who are dissatisfied with the results of other treatments. The most common method used to treat receding hairline is FUE method, but FUT method may be performed in some cases, for example in younger patients. According to the latest hair transplant study, there is a significant increase in patients receiving hair transplant services each year.
